For a habit in the past, use असे, असत or असू: लहानपणी आम्ही रोज नदीवर जात असू.

How It Works

तो नेहमी फोनवर बोलत असतो. The pattern adds “all the time” or “again and again” to a habit. A word like नेहमी, रोज or सारखे often comes with it.

With तू the helper is असतोस (a man) or असतेस (a woman), and with तुम्ही it is असता: तू नेहमी फोनवर बोलत असतोस.

The -त form is made from the verb stem and does not change for gender: बोल + त, खेळ + त. Only असतो shows who is acting. For a respected person use the plural: आजी रोज पूजा करत असतात.

Do not use आहे here. बोलत आहे is happening right now; बोलत असतो is something that goes on over days and weeks, and it can stop and start again. The past forms असे, असत and असू belong to careful speech and writing; in a chat, people say बोलायचा for the same idea.

It also fits a long state: तो आजकाल खूप काम करत असतो. (These days he works a lot.)

    I usually go to the village during the holidays. A man is speaking.

    जात असतो ends in -तो because the speaker is a man.

  5. मी रात्री उशिरापर्यंत वाचत असते.

    I read until late at night. A woman is speaking.

    वाचत असते ends in -ते because the speaker is a woman.

Common Mistakes

  • Using असते for a man.

    तो नेहमी फोनवर बोलत असते.
    तो नेहमी फोनवर बोलत असतो.

    असतो follows the doer: असतो for a man, असते for a woman.

  • Using a singular असतो with several people.

    मुले अंगणात खेळत असतो.
    मुले अंगणात खेळत असतात.

    Several people take असतात, except आम्ही, which takes असतो.
