असते तर

Past Situations That Did Not Happen

Level 5Sounds Like asatē tara

Both parts use असते, असती, असता or असतो, and each matches its own subject or object.

How It Works

Take the past form of the verb, such as आला, and add a form of असणे with the right ending. तू आला असतास तर मजा आली असती. (If you had come, it would have been fun.)

If partResult
मी लवकर निघाले असते तरमला बस मिळाली असती.
मी अभ्यास केला असता तरपास झालो असतो.
पाऊस थांबला असता तरआम्ही फिरायला गेलो असतो.

With a verb that has no object, the helper follows the subject: मी (a woman) निघाले असते, मी (a man) निघालो असतो. With a verb that has an object with no ending, it follows the object, not मी: मी अभ्यास केला असता. If the object has -ला, the helper is neuter: मी त्याला पाहिले असते. With तू, the ending -स appears: आला असतास.

The result part agrees too: मजा is feminine, so आली असती. बस is feminine, so मला बस मिळाली असती.

Both parts are in the past, though the result can stay unsaid: तू आला असतास तर! (If only you had come!) If you are talking about something that may still happen, use जर … तर with a plain verb.

आजीने आधी सांगितले असते तर आम्ही आलो असतो. (If Grandmother had told us earlier, we would have come.) The two parts may have different subjects.

Examples (5)

  1. तू आला असतास तर मजा आली असती.

If you had come, it would have been fun. A man is addressed.

आला असतास and आली असती make both parts a past that did not happen.

  2. मी लवकर निघाले असते तर मला बस मिळाली असती.

If I had left early, I would have caught the bus. A woman is speaking.

निघाले असते is the feminine form for मी.

  3. पाऊस थांबला असता तर आम्ही फिरायला गेलो असतो.

If the rain had stopped, we would have gone for a walk.

    थांबला असता and गेलो असतो are the two parts.

  4. मी अभ्यास केला असता तर पास झालो असतो.

If I had studied, I would have passed. A man is speaking.

    केला असता and झालो असतो use the masculine.

  5. आजीने आधी सांगितले असते तर आम्ही आलो असतो.

If Grandmother had told us earlier, we would have come.

The two parts can have different subjects.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the future in the result of the past "if".

    तू आला असतास तर मजा येईल.
    तू आला असतास तर मजा आली असती.

A past "if" that did not happen takes असती, असता, असते or असतो in the result.

  • Leaving out -स after तू.

    तू आला असता तर मजा आली असती.
    तू आला असतास तर मजा आली असती.

    तू takes -स on the helper: असतास.
