सकाळी / रविवारी

Days and Parts of the Day

Level 2Sounds Like sakāḷī / ravivārī

Today, tomorrow and yesterday need no ending: आज, उद्या, काल.

How It Works

The ending joins the word.

WordWhen
सकाळ (morning)सकाळी
दुपार (afternoon)दुपारी
संध्याकाळ (evening)संध्याकाळी
रात्र (night)रात्री
सोमवार (Monday)सोमवारी
रविवार (Sunday)रविवारी

The same form means on Sunday and on Sundays. रविवारी आम्ही गावाला जातो says that we go every Sunday, and the verb in the habit form shows it.

A clock time follows the part of the day: सकाळी सात वाजता means at seven in the morning, and रात्री दहा वाजता means at ten at night.

The words आज, उद्या and काल already say when, so they take no ending.

Ask with कधी? The answer can be a time word with -ई: तुम्ही कधी येता? रविवारी. आज, उद्या and काल also answer कधी? with no ending. Two time words can follow each other: रविवारी सकाळी means on Sunday morning.
