With मी and तू the form shows a man or a woman: मी होतो or मी होते, तू होतास or तू होतीस.

How It Works

PersonManWoman
मीहोतोहोते
तूहोतासहोतीस
तो / तीतो होताती होती
आम्हीहोतो
तुम्हीहोतात

A neuter noun takes होते: मूल घरी होते. More than one person takes होते for men, होत्या for women and होती for neuter nouns: मुले होती, मुली होत्या.

A respectful plural also takes the plural verb: आजी गावी होत्या.

This form describes a place or a state in the past: मी आजारी होतो (I was ill). It has no object, so no -ने is used.

The question word कुठे (where) often goes with it: तू काल कुठे होतीस?

Add का to ask yes or no: तू काल संध्याकाळी बागेत होतास का? Use it for more than a place: मी लहान होतो (I was small), ती खूप हुशार होती (she was very clever).

  • Using the singular with a neuter plural noun.
