Wishing Someone Well
For wishes about several people or things, the ending is -ोत: तुमची मुले सुखी राहोत!
How It Works
This ending belongs to blessings, cards and good wishes. It sounds warm and a little formal, so it suits birthdays, exams, journeys and get-well messages.
| Verb | Wish |
|---|---|
| लाभणे (to be granted) | तुम्हाला दीर्घायुष्य लाभो! |
The wish has the word order of a normal sentence. The person who receives the good thing comes first with -ला (तुला, तुम्हाला, आजीला). The good thing is usually the subject, so it decides whether the ending is -ो or -ोत.
The same ending is used when people ask God for something: देव तुमचे रक्षण करो! (May God protect you!) Here the one who gives the good thing, देव, is the subject.
Greeting cards often end with one of these wishes: तुझा वाढदिवस आनंदात जावो! (May your birthday pass happily!) Here जा takes -वो. The wish is the last word, and an exclamation mark closes it.
Here is one more wish with a thing as the subject: तुमचे स्वप्न पूर्ण होवो! (May your dream come true!)
