ამან/ამას/ამის
Cases of This
ეს (this) changes when it stands alone: ამან, ამას, ამის.
How It Works
| Case | This | That |
|---|---|---|
| nominative | ეს | ის |
| ergative | ამან (aman) | იმან |
| dative | ამას (amas) | იმას |
| genitive | ამის (amis) | იმის |
| instrumental | ამით | იმით |
That (ის) follows the same pattern with იმ-: იმას ვამბობ (that's what I'm saying). These forms point at a thing or an idea. For he or she, use მან, მას and მისი.
Choose the case the verb needs, as with any noun. With a present-tense doing verb, the object is in the dative: ამას ვხედავ. With ვიცი, it stays ეს: ეს ვიცი (I know this). In the past, the doer takes the ergative: ამან ყველაფერი შეცვალა.
Some everyday words come from these forms: ამიტომ (so, that's why) and ამის გამო (because of this).
Examples (5)
- ამან ყველაფერი შეცვალა.
This changed everything.
Ergative: this is the doer in the past.
- ამას ყოველდღე ვხედავ.
I see this every day.
Dative: the object of the present-tense doing verb ვხედავ.
- ამის ფასი რამდენია?
How much does this cost?
Genitive: the price of this.
- ამაზე მერე ვილაპარაკებთ.
We'll talk about this later.
ამას plus -ზე gives ამაზე.
- ამისთვის დიდი მადლობა!
Thank you very much for this!
ამის plus -თვის.
