After a question word with ပင်, one ဖြစ်စေ means "-ever": မည်သူပင် ဖြစ်စေ (whoever it is).

How It Works

ဖြစ်စေ…ဖြစ်စေ means "whether … or" or "either … or". Put ဖြစ်စေ after each of the two choices. The main clause says what is true in both cases.

The choices can be nouns (day or night, adults or children), ways of doing something with ဖြင့် (by phone or by email), or two actions. With actions, the verb takes သည် first: မိုးရွာသည်ဖြစ်စေ၊ မရွာသည်ဖြစ်စေ (whether it rains or not).

With a question word and ပင်, a single ဖြစ်စေ means "-ever": မည်သူပင် ဖြစ်စေ (whoever), မည်သည့်နေရာပင် ဖြစ်စေ (wherever).

Rules, notices and forms use this pattern to say a rule covers every case: everyone must follow the rules, whoever you are; you can apply by phone or by email. Put ၊ between the two halves when they are long.

Each choice needs its own ဖြစ်စေ. Leaving out the first one is a common slip.

    Adults or children, everyone can take part.

    The rule covers both groups.

  4. မည်သူပင် ဖြစ်စေ စည်းကမ်းကို လိုက်နာရမည်။

    Whoever you are, you must follow the rules.

    With မည်သူပင်, one ဖြစ်စေ means "whoever".

  5. မိုးရွာသည်ဖြစ်စေ၊ မရွာသည်ဖြစ်စေ ပွဲကို ကျင်းပမည်။

    Rain or shine, the event will be held.

    With two actions, each verb takes သည် before ဖြစ်စေ.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting ဖြစ်စေ after the second choice only.

    ဖုန်းဖြင့် အီးမေးလ်ဖြင့်ဖြစ်စေ ဆက်သွယ်နိုင်ပါသည်။
    ဖုန်းဖြင့်ဖြစ်စေ၊ အီးမေးလ်ဖြင့်ဖြစ်စေ ဆက်သွယ်နိုင်ပါသည်။

    Each choice needs its own ဖြစ်စေ.

  • Mixing the spoken ဖြစ်ဖြစ် into a written sentence.

    နေ့ဖြစ်ဖြစ် ညဖြစ်ဖြစ် ဆေးရုံသည် ဖွင့်ထားသည်။
    နေ့ဖြစ်စေ ညဖြစ်စေ ဆေးရုံသည် ဖွင့်ထားသည်။

    A sentence that ends with သည် takes ဖြစ်စေ.
