Means and Tools in Writing

Level 5

Speech says နဲ့ for this, and also for "with a friend". Writing splits the two: ဖြင့် for a means, နှင့် for company.

How It Works

ဖြင့် means "by" or "with" for the thing you use: ရထားဖြင့် ခရီးသွားကြသည်။ (They travel by train.)

Speech uses one word, နဲ့, for both "by train" and "with a friend". Writing uses two. ဖြင့် is for a means or a tool. နှင့် is for a person or thing that comes along.

ဖြင့် also marks the way something is done: ရိုးရှင်းသော စကားလုံးများဖြင့် ရှင်းပြသည် (explained it in simple words). Forms and official notices say which language to use with it: မြန်မာဘာသာဖြင့် ဖြည့်ရမည် (must be filled in in Burmese).

You will meet ဖြင့် inside longer formal words too. အနေဖြင့် means "as" or "in the role of", and သဖြင့် means "because" in news reports.

Keep the whole sentence written when you use ဖြင့်. Spoken endings such as တယ် do not go with it.

  1. ခရီးသည်များ ရထားဖြင့် မန္တလေးသို့ သွားကြသည်။

    The passengers travel to Mandalay by train.

    ရထားဖြင့် names the means of travel.

  2. လျှောက်လွှာကို မြန်မာဘာသာဖြင့် ဖြည့်ရမည်။

    The application form must be filled in in Burmese.

    ဖြင့် after a language says which one to use.

  3. ငွေကို မိုဘိုင်းဖုန်းဖြင့် ပေးချေနိုင်သည်။

    You can pay with your mobile phone.

    The phone is the tool used to pay.

  4. ကလေးများသည် ခဲတံဖြင့် ပုံဆွဲကြသည်။

    The children draw with pencils.

    ခဲတံဖြင့် marks the tool.

  5. ဆရာကြီးသည် ရိုးရှင်းသော စကားလုံးများဖြင့် ရှင်းပြသည်။

    The teacher explained it in simple words.

    ဖြင့် marks the way the explanation was given.

Common Mistakes

  • Using ဖြင့် for a person who comes along.

    သူငယ်ချင်းဖြင့် ဈေးသို့ သွားသည်။
    သူငယ်ချင်းနှင့် ဈေးသို့ သွားသည်။

    A friend who comes along takes နှင့်. ဖြင့် is for a means or a tool.
