ချင်

Wanting to Do Something

Level 2

ချင် needs a verb. To want a thing, use လိုချင်: ဖုန်းအသစ် လိုချင်တယ်။ (I want a new phone.)

How It Works

ချင် shows what someone wants to do. It goes straight after the verb.

FormExampleEnglish
statementသွားချင်တယ်။I want to go.
negativeမသွားချင်ဘူး။I don't want to go.
questionသွားချင်လား။Do you want to go?
a thingကော်ဖီ လိုချင်တယ်။I want a coffee.

In the negative, မ goes before the verb, never before ချင်: မစားချင်ဘူး (I don't want to eat).

ချင်တယ် is plain and fine in most talk. With older people, you can add ပါ: သွားချင်ပါတယ်.

To ask what someone wants to do, put ဘာ before the verb: ဘာစားချင်လဲ။ (What would you like to eat?) Shop staff and friends ask this all the time.

ချင် also tells how you feel right now. အိပ်ချင်တယ် is the normal way to say "I'm sleepy", and ငိုချင်တယ် means "I feel like crying."

Examples (5)

  1. မုန့်ဟင်းခါး စားချင်တယ်။

    I want to eat mohinga.

ချင် comes right after စား (eat).

  2. ကျွန်မ ပုဂံကို သွားချင်တယ်။

I want to go to Bagan.

A woman speaks; သွားချင် means "want to go".

  3. ဒီနေ့ အပြင်မထွက်ချင်ဘူး။

I don't want to go out today.

မ goes before the verb ထွက်, and ဘူး ends it.

  4. ကော်ဖီ သောက်ချင်လား။

    Would you like a coffee?

သောက်ချင်လား asks if someone wants to drink.

  5. ကျွန်တော် ဖုန်းအသစ် လိုချင်တယ်။

    I want a new phone.

A man speaks; လိုချင် is for wanting a thing.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting ချင် straight after a noun.

    ကော်ဖီ ချင်တယ်။
    ကော်ဖီ လိုချင်တယ်။

    ချင် follows a verb. For a thing, say လိုချင်, or add a verb: ကော်ဖီ သောက်ချင်တယ်။

  • Putting မ before ချင်.

    စားမချင်ဘူး။
    မစားချင်ဘူး။

မ always goes right before the main verb.
