ပြီ
Already and Now
To say an action is finished, put ပြီး (finish) before it: စားပြီးပြီ။ (I've already eaten.)
How It Works
ပြီ is a sentence ending, like တယ်. Choose ပြီ when the sentence reports a change. Something has happened, and the situation is now different.
| With တယ် | With ပြီ |
|---|---|
| မိုးရွာတယ်။ It rains. | မိုးရွာပြီ။ It's started raining. |
| ရောက်တယ်။ I arrive. | ရောက်ပြီ။ I'm here now. |
| စားတယ်။ I eat. | စားပြီးပြီ။ I've already eaten. |
To say an action is done, put ပြီး (finish) before ပြီ. ပြီး alone at the end is not a full sentence, so always close with ပြီ.
Add လား to ask whether something has happened yet: ရောက်ပြီလား။ (Are you there yet?) A friendly greeting is ထမင်းစားပြီးပြီလား။ (Have you eaten yet?)
A negative sentence ends in ဘူး, not ပြီ. For "not yet", use မ…သေးဘူး: မစားရသေးဘူး။ (I haven't eaten yet.)
A common phrase is ရပါပြီ။ (It's ready. / That's enough, thanks.) You hear it when an order is ready, or when someone offers you more food. It puts ပါ before ပြီ, the same way ပါတယ် puts ပါ before တယ်.

Common Mistakes
Ending with ပြီး alone to say "I've eaten."
ကျွန်မ စားပြီး။ကျွန်မ စားပြီးပြီ။ပြီး means finish. The sentence still needs the ending ပြီ after it.
Using ပြီ in a negative sentence.
မရောက်ပြီ။မရောက်သေးဘူး။A negative sentence ends in ဘူး. For "not yet", use မ…သေးဘူး.
