လိုတယ်
Needing Something
The negative မလိုဘူး means "don't need", and with ဖို့ it means "no need to": လာဖို့ မလိုဘူး (You don't need to come).
How It Works
လို means "to need" or "to be short of". It works with a thing or with an action.
| Form | Example | English |
|---|---|---|
| a thing | အကူအညီ လိုတယ်။ | I need help. |
| an action | ဆရာဝန် ပြဖို့ လိုတယ်။ | I need to see a doctor. |
| question | ဘာလိုလဲ။ | What do you need? |
| negative | မလိုပါဘူး။ | I don't need it. |
| no need to | လာဖို့ မလိုဘူး။ | You don't need to come. |
A verb never comes straight before လို in speech. Put ဖို့ between them: သွားဖို့ လိုတယ် (I need to go).
လိုချင်တယ် means "want". Use လိုတယ် when you need something and လိုချင်တယ် when you would like it.
Shop staff often ask ဘာလိုသေးလဲ (What else do you need?). To say how much you are short, put the amount before လို: ငါးထောင် လိုသေးတယ် (I'm still 5,000 kyats short).
