Being Unable to Perform an Action

Level 4

Mark the person with سے and keep the negative in the verb phrase.

How It Works

For a particular failed attempt, use a past form: نہیں اٹھایا گیا. The final form can agree with an unmarked affected item rather than with the person marked by سے.

This construction also occurs with intransitive activities, as in اس شور میں سویا نہیں جاتا. Such an impersonal inability pattern is distinct from an ordinary passive with an affected object.

Compare a neutral ability statement with سکنا and a successful or failed attempt with پانا. Context may make the سے construction express physical limits, emotional difficulty or inability to tolerate a situation.
