було/буде + -но/-то

Past and Future of -но or -то Predicates

Level 5Sounds Like bulo/bude + -no/-to

The impersonal-passive construction (було/буде + -но/-то) focuses on a finished action or state. It is highly formal and official, often used in news or legal contexts.

How It Works

This pattern, often called the impersonal-passive predicative, is a hallmark of formal Ukrainian syntax. It is used to report a completed result while removing the focus from who performed the action. These forms are almost exclusively derived from perfective verbs.

1. Formation:
The construction uses an auxiliary verb and an invariant form ending in -но or -то:

  • Past: було + -но/-то
  • Future: буде + -но/-то
  • Present: -но/-то (with a zero copula)

2. Choosing -но vs -то:
These forms are derived from the passive participle stem:

  • -то: Used for verbs with stems in -ну-, -о-, -р-, or monosyllabic stems ending in -и, -і, -у, or -я (e.g., бити → бито, гріти → гріто, взути → взуто, взяти → взято, повернути → повернуто, стерти → стерто).
  • -но: Used for most other verbs. Note that stems ending in -и- or -і- often undergo consonant mutations (e.g., зробити → зроблено, запросити → запрошено).

3. The Accusative Object:
A unique feature of Ukrainian is that the logical object stays in the Accusative case. It does NOT become the nominative subject. For example: Книгу (Acc.) було написано, not Книга (Nom.) було написано.

4. The 'No Agent' Rule:
Crucially, this construction cannot be used with an agent in the Instrumental case. You cannot say Книгу було написано автором. If the doer is important, use the active voice (Автор написав книгу) or a passive participle predicate (Книга була написана автором).

5. Usage and Nuance:
This is the standard for official documents, news, and instructions. It sounds more dynamic than a personal passive because it emphasizes the completion of the act itself rather than just the state of the object.

Examples (5)

  1. Проєкт було завершено вчасно.

The project was completed on time.

Word by Word: Project (Acc.) was (Neut.) finished (Inv.) on time.

Here, 'проєкт' is in the accusative case (which looks like nominative for inanimate masculine nouns), and 'було завершено' indicates a finished result.

  2. Усіх учасників буде повідомлено про зміни.

All participants will be notified of the changes.

Word by Word: All participants (Acc.) will be (Fut.) notified (Inv.) about changes.

This uses the future auxiliary 'буде'. Note that 'учасників' is in the animate accusative plural.

  3. Двері було зачинено на ключ.

The door was locked with a key.

Word by Word: Door (Acc.) was (Neut.) closed (Inv.) on key.

The form 'зачинено' is invariant, even though 'двері' is a plural-only noun.

  4. Заяву було прийнято до розгляду.

The application was accepted for consideration.

Word by Word: Application (Acc.) was (Neut.) accepted (Inv.) to consideration.

Note that 'заяву' is clearly in the accusative case (ending in -у). Using the nominative 'заява' here would be incorrect.

  5. Цю церкву було збудовано у вісімнадцятому столітті.

This church was built in the eighteenth century.

Word by Word: This church (Acc.) was (Neut.) built (Inv.) in eighteenth century.

A classic historical statement using the impersonal passive to focus on the event of construction.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Nominative case for the object instead of the Accusative.

    Стаття було написано.
    Статтю було написано.

In this impersonal construction, the object must remain in the Accusative case (Статтю), not the Nominative (Стаття).

  • Trying to make the -но/-то form agree in gender with the object.

    Книгу було написана.
    Книгу було написано.

The -но/-то forms are invariant predicatives. They always end in -о and never change to match the gender or number of the object.

  • Expressing the agent (doer) in the Instrumental case.

    Двері було зачинено охоронцем.
    Двері було зачинено.

The -но/-то construction is impersonal and normally does not name the doer. 'Двері було зачинено охоронцем' occurs in official style, but careful writers avoid it. If you need to mention the doer, use the active voice or a passive participle.
