First-Person Singular Verb Consonant Alternations

When you conjugate many Ukrainian verbs for 'I' (я), the last consonant of the stem changes (e.g., д → дж, т → ч, с → ш). In Second Conjugation verbs, this change usually only happens in the 'я' form, though there are exceptions like бігти.

How It Works

In Ukrainian, verb stems often undergo a transformation when the first-person singular ending is added. This is particularly important for Second Conjugation verbs.

1. Dental and Sibilant Alternations:
In the Second Conjugation, these changes occur only in the 'я' form. For all other persons, the consonant reverts to its original form. Note that after the resulting hushing consonants (ж, ч, ш, щ, дж, ждж), the ending -ю becomes -у.

  • д → дж: ходити → я ходжу (but ти ходиш)
  • т → ч: платити → я плачу (but ти платиш)
  • з → ж: возити → я вожу (but ти возиш)
  • с → ш: просити → я прошу (but ти просиш)
  • ст → щ: чистити → я чищу (but ти чистиш)
  • зд → ждж: їздити → я їжджу (but ти їздиш)

2. Velar Alternations:
Alternations like г → ж, к → ч, and х → ш are characteristic of the First Conjugation (e.g., берегти → я бережу, ти бережеш). They do not occur in the Second Conjugation, with the irregular exception of бігти (я біжу, вони біжать).

3. Labial Alternations (The Epenthetic 'л'):
If a stem ends in б, п, в, м, or ф, an extra л is inserted. In the Second Conjugation, this 'л' appears in the 'я' form and the third-person plural (вони) form (where -ять becomes -лять).

  • б → бл: любити → я люблю, вони люблять
  • п → пл: купити → я куплю, вони куплять
  • в → вл: ставити → я ставлю, вони ставлять
  • м → мл: знайомити → я знайомлю, вони знайомлять
  • ф → фл: графити → я графлю, вони графлять

4. First Conjugation Note:
In First Conjugation verbs (like писати), if a consonant changes in the 'я' form (я пишу), it stays changed for all other forms (ти пишеш). This also applies to labials: in the First Conjugation verb сипати (to pour), the 'л' persists throughout (я сиплю, ти сиплеш).

Examples (6)

  1. Я ходжу до парку щодня.

I walk to the park every day.

Word by Word: I walk to park every-day.

The verb 'ходити' (to walk) changes 'д' to 'дж' in the first-person singular.

  2. Я прошу вашої допомоги.

    I ask for your help.

Word by Word: I ask your help.

The verb 'просити' (to ask) changes 'с' to 'ш' in the 'я' form.

  3. Я дуже люблю українську музику.

I love Ukrainian music very much.

Word by Word: I very love Ukrainian music.

The verb 'любити' (to love) adds an epenthetic 'л' after the labial 'б' in the 'я' form.

  4. Я чищу зуби двічі на день.

I clean my teeth twice a day.

Word by Word: I clean teeth twice on day.

The cluster 'ст' in 'чистити' changes to 'щ' (pronounced shch) in the 'я' form.

  5. Я плачу за каву.

I am paying for the coffee.

Word by Word: I pay for coffee.

The verb 'платити' (to pay) changes 'т' to 'ч'. Note the stress is on the last syllable (плачу́).

  6. Я їжджу на роботу автобусом.

I travel to work by bus.

Word by Word: I travel on work by-bus.

The verb 'їздити' (to travel/ride) changes 'зд' to 'ждж' in the 'я' form.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Russian 'ж' instead of the Ukrainian 'дж' for the 'д' alternation.

    Я хожу додому.
    Я ходжу додому.

In Ukrainian, the consonant 'д' alternates with 'дж', not just 'ж'. Make sure to pronounce both the 'д' and 'ж' sounds together.

  • Forgetting the epenthetic 'л' after labial consonants (б, п, в, м, ф).

    Я любю тебе.
    Я люблю тебе.

When a verb stem ends in a labial consonant like 'б', you must insert 'л' before the 'ю' ending in the 'я' form.

  • Carrying the alternation into other persons in Second Conjugation verbs.

    Ти ходжеш.
    Ти ходиш.

For Second Conjugation verbs (like ходити), the dental alternation (д → дж) only happens in the 'я' form. The 'ти' form uses the original stem consonant.
