Neuter Past Tense

Level 2Sounds Like minulij čas serednʹogo rodu

Formed by adding -ло to the verb stem. Used for neuter nouns (like вікно) and 'it' sentences (like було холодно).

How It Works

For most verbs (those ending in a vowel + -ти), to form the neuter past tense, take the infinitive (e.g., читати), remove the -ти, and add -ло.

1. Agreement with Neuter Nouns:
If the subject is a neuter noun, the verb must end in -ло. Neuter nouns usually end in -о, -е, or specific categories in -я (such as abstract nouns with doubled consonants like життя, young animals like кошеня, and words for human babies/youth like маля, дівча, хлоп'я). Additionally, indeclinable foreign nouns denoting inanimate objects (like метро, кіно, кафе, таксі) are neuter and take the neuter past tense.
Example: Сонце світило (The sun was shining).

2. Agreement with Neuter Pronouns:
Neuter pronouns like воно (it), це (this), те (that), все (everything), and що (what) also take the neuter past tense.
Example: Що сталося? (What happened?).

3. Impersonal Constructions:
Ukrainian uses the neuter form as a 'default' when there is no grammatical subject. This is very common for:

  • Weather: Світало (It was dawning).
  • States/Feelings: Мені було сумно (I was sad).
  • Existence/Absence: Не було часу (There was no time).

4. Agreement with Quantities and Numerals:
When the subject includes a quantity word (like багато or мало) or numerals 5 and above (specifically 5–20 and compound numerals ending in 0 or 5–9, but not those ending in 1, 2, 3, or 4), the past tense verb frequently defaults to the neuter singular form to emphasize the group as a whole (especially for inanimate objects). However, for animate subjects, the plural form is equally valid and often preferred to emphasize the individuals performing the action.
Examples: Багато людей прийшло. (Many people came - group focus) or П'ять студентів прийшли. (Five students came - individual focus).

5. Reflexive Verbs and Suffixes:
For verbs with the reflexive suffix, add -ся or the shortened -сь after the neuter ending -ло (e.g., сміятися → сміялося / сміялось are both correct). For verbs ending in -нути, process verbs often drop the -ну- in the past tense (e.g., замерзнути → замерзло, though forms like замерзнуло are also technically correct), while verbs with the semelfactive suffix -ну- (denoting a single action) retain it (e.g., стукнути → стукнуло).

6. Consonant Stems:
For verbs like нести or могти, the neuter form is несло and могло. Unlike the чоловічий рід (ніс, міг), the neuter does not change о or е to і because the syllable remains open.

7. Irregular Verbs:
The highly frequent verb іти (to go) and its prefixed forms (like піти, знайти) use a completely different stem in the past tense: йшло / ішло (e.g., Все йшло за планом).

8. Acronyms (Абревіатури):
Acronyms take the gender of their head noun. If the head noun is neuter, the acronym takes the neuter past tense.
Example: МЗС (Міністерство закордонних справ) повідомило (The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported).

9. Distinguishing from Impersonal Forms on -но/-то:
Do not confuse the neuter past tense (ending in -ло) with impersonal predicative forms ending in -но or -то (like зроблено, відкрито). While they look somewhat similar and both lack a standard subject, -но/-то forms function like passive participles indicating a completed action by an unspecified agent, whereas -ло is the standard past tense for neuter subjects or natural/impersonal states.

Examples (6)

  1. Сонце повільно зійшло над лісом.

The sun slowly rose over the forest.

Word by Word: Sun slowly rose over forest.

The verb 'зійшло' agrees with the neuter subject 'сонце'.

  2. Вчора було дуже холодно.

    Yesterday it was very cold.

Word by Word: Yesterday was very cold.

This is an impersonal construction describing the weather; 'було' is the default neuter form.

  3. Що сталося?

    What happened?

    Word by Word: What happened-self?

The question word 'що' (what) acts as a neuter pronoun, requiring the neuter past tense 'сталося'.

  4. Все йшло за планом.

    Everything went according to plan.

Word by Word: Everything went according-to plan.

The pronoun 'все' (everything) takes the neuter past tense. Notice the irregular past tense stem 'йшло' for the verb 'іти'.

  5. Це було важко.

    This was hard.

Word by Word: This was hard.

The demonstrative pronoun 'це' (this) triggers the neuter past tense 'було'.

  6. Озеро повністю замерзло.

    The lake froze completely.

Word by Word: Lake completely froze.

The neuter noun 'озеро' takes the neuter past tense 'замерзло', which drops the '-ну-' suffix from the infinitive 'замерзнути' (though 'замерзнуло' is also correct).

Common Mistakes

  • Using neuter agreement for masculine nouns ending in -о.

    Мій тато прийшло додому.
    Мій тато прийшов додому.

Words like 'тато' (dad) or 'батько' (father) refer to male persons and must take masculine agreement, even though they end in -о.

  • Using the neuter past form for a woman.

    Оксана було вдома.
    Оксана була вдома.

The past tense must match the natural gender of the subject. A woman or girl takes the feminine '-ла' ending, not the neuter '-ло'.
