Instrumental of Means

Level 3Sounds Like orudnij zasobu

The Instrumental of Means (орудний засобу) shows how you do something or what you use to do it. In Ukrainian, you usually use the noun's instrumental form alone, without a preposition like 'with' or 'by'.

How It Works

The Instrumental of Means is a fundamental use of the instrumental case.

1. The 'No Preposition' Rule
The most important rule for learners is that tools and means of transport do not take the preposition з (with). Using з implies accompaniment (doing something alongside an object) rather than using it as a tool.

  • Пишу ручкою = I write with a pen (using it).
  • Йду з ручкою = I am walking with a pen (carrying it).

2. Common Categories

  • Physical Tools: забивати молотком (to hit with a hammer), різати ножем (to cut with a knife).
  • Transport: їхати потягом (to go by train), летіти літаком (to fly by plane).
  • Abstract Means: платити карткою (to pay by card), говорити українською (to speak [by means of] Ukrainian).

3. Morphological Tips
The endings change based on gender and number:

  • Masculine/Neuter Singular: Usually -ом (hard) or -ем/-єм (soft).
  • Feminine Singular: Usually -ою (hard) or -ею/-єю (soft).
  • Feminine (Consonant stem): Doubling occurs only if a single consonant is between vowels (сіллю). If the stem ends in a cluster, there is no doubling (радістю). If it ends in a labial (п, б, в, м, ф) or 'р', use an apostrophe (любов'ю).
  • Plural (All Genders): Usually -ами (hard) or -ями (soft), for example: фарбами (with paints), очима (with eyes).

Examples (5)

  1. Він забиває цвях молотком.

He is driving the nail with a hammer.

Word by Word: He drives nail hammer(instrumental).

The noun 'молоток' (hammer) changes to 'молотком' to show it is the tool being used.

  2. Ми добиралися до міста потягом.

We reached the city by train.

Word by Word: We reached to city train(instrumental).

In standard Ukrainian, transport is often expressed using the bare instrumental case.

  3. Художниця малює картину олійними фарбами.

The artist is painting the picture with oil paints.

Word by Word: Artist paints picture oil paints(instrumental plural).

Both the adjective and the noun are in the instrumental plural to show the medium of the art.

  4. Я завжди плачу банківською карткою.

I always pay with a bank card.

Word by Word: I always pay bank card(instrumental).

Even modern technology like a 'card' follows the traditional instrumental of means pattern.

  5. Вона бачить світ своїми очима.

She sees the world with her own eyes.

Word by Word: She sees world her eyes(instrumental plural).

Body parts used to perform an action (like seeing or holding) are put in the instrumental case.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the preposition 'з' (with) for tools.

    Я пишу з олівцем.
    Я пишу олівцем.

'З' means 'together with.' If you say 'з олівцем,' it sounds like you and the pencil are writing a letter together as partners.

  • Incorrectly doubling consonants in clusters or missing the apostrophe in 3rd declension feminine nouns.

Він зустрів її з радісттю та любовю.
Він зустрів її з радістю та любов'ю.

Doubling only occurs if a single consonant is between two vowels (сіллю). If the stem ends in a consonant cluster (радість -> радістю), no doubling occurs. If it ends in a labial (п, б, в, м, ф) or 'р', use an apostrophe instead (любов'ю).

  • Using the Accusative case for the tool.

    Я їм ложку.
    Я їм ложкою.

'Я їм ложку' means 'I am eating the spoon' (Accusative). 'Я їм ложкою' means 'I am eating [food] using a spoon' (Instrumental).
