-но/-то + Accusative

Object with Impersonal Passive

Level 4Sounds Like dodatok pri formah na -no/-to

In Ukrainian, impersonal resultative forms ending in -но or -то (like зроблено or відкрито) do not have a subject. Instead, the thing being acted upon remains the direct object in the Accusative case.

How It Works

The -но/-то construction is a distinctive feature of Ukrainian syntax, especially compared to other East Slavic languages. It is used to report completed events where the focus is on the result rather than the performer.

1. The Case Rule:
In this construction, the object of the action remains in the Accusative case. Unlike a standard passive, the object does not become the grammatical subject. This pattern is used with transitive verbs.

  • Книжка написана (Passive Participle) = The book is written (Focus on the state of the book).
  • Книжку написано (Impersonal Form) = The book has been written (Focus on the event/result).

2. No Agent Allowed:
A critical rule of this construction is that the agent (the person who did the action) cannot be expressed in the instrumental case. Saying Книжку написано автором is considered a grammatical error. If you need to mention the agent, use an active sentence instead.

3. Negation:
Unlike many other constructions where the object changes to the Genitive when negated, in the -но/-то construction, the object typically remains in the Accusative: Роботу не зроблено (The work has not been done).

4. Formation:
These forms are indeclinable.

  • Use -но if the passive participle ends in -ний (e.g., збудований → збудовано).
  • Use -то if the passive participle ends in -тий (e.g., закритий → закрито).

5. Tense:
By itself, it implies a recent result. To place it in the past or future, use the auxiliary було or буде.

Examples (4)

  1. Цю статтю написано вчора.

    This article was written yesterday.

Word by Word: This [Acc.] article [Acc.] written yesterday.

Note that 'статтю' is in the Accusative case, even though it is the focus of the sentence.

  2. У місті відкрито нову аптеку.

A new pharmacy has been opened in the city.

Word by Word: In city opened new [Acc.] pharmacy [Acc.].

The form 'відкрито' is impersonal and governs 'аптеку' in the Accusative.

  3. Двері було зачинено на замок.

The door was closed with a lock.

Word by Word: Door [Acc.] was closed on lock.

Even with the past tense auxiliary 'було', the object 'двері' (plural Accusative) remains the object.

  4. Проєкт буде завершено вчасно.

The project will be completed on time.

Word by Word: Project [Acc.] will-be completed on-time.

In the future tense, the object 'проєкт' stays in the Accusative case.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Nominative case for the object.

    Школа збудовано.
    Школу збудовано.

Learners often treat the object as a subject. Because -но/-то forms are impersonal, the object must be in the Accusative (Школу).

  • Adding an agent in the Instrumental case.

    Лист написано мною.
    Я написав лист.

In Ukrainian, -но/-то forms are used specifically when the agent is NOT mentioned. If you want to say 'by me', use a standard active sentence.

Learn This First

To understand how impersonal passive forms (like 'збудовано') take an object, you first need to be familiar with the formation of these -но/-то forms. Additionally, you must understand the Accusative case, as it is used to mark the direct object that remains in the sentence despite the passive construction.
