Use it with a second past moment, often introduced by तेव्हा: मी पोहोचलो तेव्हा बस गेली होती.

How It Works

Use -ले होते when one past event happened before another. The second event, or the moment you are talking about, is in the simple past: मी पोहोचलो तेव्हा बस गेली होती.

With a verb that does not take an object, both words agree with the person who acts: मी (a man) पोहोचलो होतो, मी (a woman) पोहोचले होते. With a transitive verb, both words agree with the object (or are neuter when the object has -ला: तिने मुलाला पाहिले होते), and the doer takes -ने or -नी for third persons: तिने पत्र लिहिले होते.

Do not use आहे when you look back from a past moment: it joins a finished action to now (मी जेवले आहे), while होते puts the finished action before a past moment. For a question, add का: तुम्ही पत्र वाचले होते का?

  1. मी पोहोचलो तेव्हा बस गेली होती.

    The bus had left when I arrived. A man is speaking.

    गेली होती puts the leaving before the arrival; both words agree with बस.

  2. मी पोहोचले तेव्हा सई आधीच आली होती.

    Sai had already come when I arrived. A woman is speaking.

    आली होती says Sai came before the speaker.

  3. आईने पोळ्या आधीच केल्या होत्या.

    Mom had already made the rotis.

    केल्या होत्या agrees with पोळ्या, which is feminine plural.

  4. पाऊस थांबला होता, म्हणून आम्ही बाहेर पडलो.

    The rain had stopped, so we went out.

    थांबला होता is the earlier event.

  5. तुम्ही ते पत्र वाचले होते का?

    Had you read that letter?

    का turns the sentence into a yes-or-no question.

Common Mistakes

  • Using आहे for an event that came before another past moment.

    मी पोहोचलो तेव्हा बस गेली आहे.
    मी पोहोचलो तेव्हा बस गेली होती.

    आहे links an action to the present, so it does not fit a sentence that looks back from a past moment.

  • Not matching होते to the object.

    आईने पोळ्या केल्या होते.
    आईने पोळ्या केल्या होत्या.

    पोळ्या is feminine plural, so the helper is होत्या.
