The speaker takes -नी or -ने, and सांगितले stays the same.

How It Works

Put the statement first. Then add a comma, असे, the speaker and the verb. शाळा उद्या सुरू राहतील, असे आयुक्तांनी सांगितले. (The commissioner said that the schools will stay open tomorrow.)

An office or body takes -ने: हवामान खात्याने, महापालिकेने. Several people, or one respected official, take the plural -नी, which is -ांनी for words like आयुक्त: आयुक्तांनी, अभियंत्यांनी, पोलिसांनी. One ordinary speaker takes -ने, as in प्रवक्त्याने. Other verbs fit the same frame: स्पष्ट केले (made clear), कळवले (informed), जाहीर केले (announced).

An appeal can use आवाहन: नागरिकांनी घाबरू नये, असे आवाहन पोलिसांनी केले. (The police appealed to citizens not to panic.)

The statement stays in the form the speaker meant, with its own tense: दुरुस्तीचे काम आठवडाभरात पूर्ण होईल, असे अभियंत्यांनी सांगितले.

The person who is told takes -ला: आयुक्तांनी नागरिकांना सांगितले. The speaker never takes -ला.

असे changes when a noun stands in for the statement, and the verb agrees with that noun: अशी माहिती पोलिसांनी दिली (f), असा इशारा दिला (m), असे आवाहन केले (n). With सांगितले the thing said is असे itself, so the verb stays सांगितले.

    -ने marks the department as the speaker.

  3. नागरिकांनी घाबरू नये, असे आवाहन पोलिसांनी केले.

    The police appealed to citizens not to panic.

    आवाहन केले replaces सांगितले for an appeal.

  4. पूल लवकरच खुला होईल, असे महापालिकेने स्पष्ट केले.

    The municipal corporation made it clear that the bridge will open soon.

    स्पष्ट केले can replace सांगितले.

  5. दुरुस्तीचे काम आठवडाभरात पूर्ण होईल, असे अभियंत्यांनी सांगितले.

    The engineers said that the repair work will be completed within a week.

    -नी marks several speakers.

Common Mistakes

  • Marking the speaker with -ला.

    शाळा उद्या सुरू राहतील, असे आयुक्तांना सांगितले.
    शाळा उद्या सुरू राहतील, असे आयुक्तांनी सांगितले.

    आयुक्तांना means that someone told the commissioner. The speaker takes -नी.

  • Using the Hindi word ऐसा.

    शाळा उद्या सुरू राहतील, ऐसे आयुक्तांनी सांगितले.
    शाळा उद्या सुरू राहतील, असे आयुक्तांनी सांगितले.

    ऐसा is Hindi. Marathi says असे.
