म्हणे
Saying What You Heard
The word can also tease: तो म्हणे आज खूप व्यस्त आहे!
How It Works
Say the news as a normal sentence, then add म्हणे. The sentence keeps its own tense, and म्हणे stays the same for every person and gender.
| Where | Example |
|---|---|
| at the end | उद्या पाऊस पडणार आहे म्हणे. |
| at the end | तिथले वडापाव खूप छान असतात म्हणे. |
| after the topic, with doubt | तो म्हणे आज खूप व्यस्त आहे! |
The word belongs to speech and to chats between friends, where it is also written म्हणं. A news report uses असे सांगितले for this, and म्हणाला tells who the speaker is: तो म्हणाला की तो परदेशी जाणार आहे.
म्हणे does not name a source. The listener hears only that the news is second-hand. Put it after the topic, and the sentence sounds teasing: तो म्हणे आज खूप व्यस्त आहे! means “Apparently he's very busy today!”
Do not use म्हणे for something you saw or did yourself. It says that the news came from someone else.
The word is the same for a man, a woman and a group: तो, ती and ते all go with म्हणे.

Common Mistakes
Using म्हणे for something the speaker saw.

Using म्हणे for a named speaker.
