-ण्याचा / -ण्याची / -ण्याचे

Actions Linked to a Noun

Level 3Sounds Like ṇyācā / -ṇyācī / -ṇyācē

The ending matches the noun that follows, so सवय takes -ची and छंद takes -चा.

How It Works

This pattern turns an action into a description of a noun. वाचणे (to read) becomes वाचण्याची सवय (the habit of reading). The ending matches the noun that follows: masculine -चा, feminine -ची, neuter -चे.

NounGenderExample
उत्साहmasculineखेळण्याचा उत्साह
सवयfeminineवाचण्याची सवय
कामneuterसाफ करण्याचे काम

When the noun takes another ending, the form changes with it, as with any word that ends in -चा. When the noun takes -बद्दल, the noun is in its ending shape (सवयी) and the ending becomes -च्या to match it: वाचण्याच्या सवयीबद्दल (about the habit of reading).

The verb itself is the plain -ण्या form, with no tense: येण्याचा, जाण्याची, शिकण्याचे. Common nouns after it are सवय (habit), वेळ (time), छंद (hobby), उत्साह (eagerness), काम (job) and जागा (place).

Examples (5)

She has a habit of reading every day.

-ची matches the feminine noun सवय.

  2. त्याला खेळण्याचा उत्साह आहे.

    He is eager to play.

-चा matches the masculine noun उत्साह.

  3. आज मला घर साफ करण्याचे काम आहे.

-चे matches the neuter noun काम.

  4. आपण वाचण्याच्या सवयीबद्दल बोलूया.

-च्या is the ending before -बद्दल, so the noun is in its ending shape.

The fun of getting wet in the rain is special.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the bare -णे form.

    तिला वाचणे सवय आहे.
    तिला वाचण्याची सवय आहे.

The verb needs -ण्याची before the noun.

  • Using the wrong gender ending.

    तिला वाचण्याचा सवय आहे.
    तिला वाचण्याची सवय आहे.

सवय is feminine, so the ending is -ची.
