-णे (नाम)

Actions as Nouns

Level 4Sounds Like ṇē (nāma)

The word is neuter, so the words that describe it usually end in -े: चांगले, सोपे.

How It Works

Every Marathi verb has a -णे form, the one a dictionary lists. It also works as a noun for the action itself.

UseExample
subjectरोज चालणे चांगले आहे.
what someone likesमला वाचणे आवडते.
with words in frontखोटे बोलणे वाईट आहे.
negativeसकाळी लवकर उठणे सोपे नाही.

Describing words agree with the neuter: चांगले, सोपे. Words that do not change, like वाईट or उत्तम, stay as they are.

Before an ending the form takes the shape -ण्या-: चालण्याने (by walking), चालण्यासाठी (in order to walk), चालण्याचा (of walking). Those endings belong to their own entries.

English uses an -ing word for the same job. Compare चालतो (he walks) with चालणे (walking).

The -णे noun can hold a whole phrase: पाणी पिणे आरोग्यासाठी चांगले आहे. (Drinking water is good for your health.) Many verbs of liking use the same noun, and मला पोहणे आवडते means the same as मला पोहायला आवडते.

उठणे is the subject, and सोपे is neuter.

  • Not agreeing in the neuter.

    वाचणे चांगला आहे.
