असे … की
Reporting Words and Thoughts
After verbs like वाटणे and ऐकणे, the same link works: तिला असे वाटते की उद्या पाऊस पडेल.
How It Works
Marathi reports a statement by saying who said it, then की, then what was said. The words after की keep their own tense: सर असे म्हणाले की परीक्षा सोमवारी आहे.
| Verb | Example |
|---|---|
| म्हणणे (say) | तो असे म्हणाला की तो उद्या येईल. |
| वाटणे (think) | तिला असे वाटते की उद्या पाऊस पडेल. |
| ऐकणे (hear) | आम्ही ऐकले आहे की दुकान आज बंद आहे. |
| सांगणे (tell) | तिने सांगितले की ती उशिरा येईल. |
की is written with a long ई, and it always stands before the reported clause.
When a person reports a command, the command stays as it was spoken: आई मला म्हणाली की तू लवकर घरी ये. Marathi keeps the speaker's own words, and the English is “Mom told me to come home early”.
For a person who is respected, the reporting verb is plural: सर म्हणाले, आजी म्हणाल्या.
To give your own thought, use मला वाटते की: मला असे वाटते की तो येईल. (I think he will come.)
