How It Works

अजून has three jobs.

For an event that has not happened yet, the verb is the plain past negative. For a state, use नाही alone: तो अजून तयार नाही. (He is not ready yet.) The present perfect negative is also common: तो अजून आलेला नाही. In a woman's sentence the verb shows her gender: मी अजून जेवले नाही. A man says मी अजून जेवलो नाही. (I haven't eaten yet.)

A positive sentence with अजून can use the present perfect: आजी अजून झोपल्या आहेत. (Grandma is still asleep.)

To ask whether something has happened, use अजून in the question too: तो अजून आला नाही का? (Hasn't he come yet?) The answer is अजून नाही. (Not yet.) That short answer is very common in everyday talk.

    पोहोचलो shows a man is speaking.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out नाही for not yet.

    तो अजून आला.
    तो अजून आला नाही.

    Without नाही the sentence does not say not yet.

  • Using the Hindi word अभी.

    तो अभी आला नाही.
    तो अजून आला नाही.

    Marathi uses अजून for yet and still.
