The full form करत आहे shows no gender, and the spoken forms करतोय and करतेय show a man and a woman.

How It Works

PersonFull formSpoken form
मी (man)करत आहेकरतोय
मी (woman)करत आहेकरतेय
तू (man)करत आहेसकरतोयस
तू (woman)करत आहेसकरतेयस
तो / तीकरत आहेकरतोय / करतेय
आम्हीकरत आहोतकरतोय
तुम्हीकरत आहातकरताय
ते (more than one)करत आहेतकरताहेत

Compare the habit with the action in progress. मी चहा पितो means I usually drink tea. मी चहा पितोय means I am drinking tea now. आत्ता (now) often goes with the second one.

In writing and in lessons, use the full form. The spoken forms are one word and fit a chat between friends.

To say something is not happening right now, speech uses नाहीये after the -त form: ती अभ्यास करत नाहीये (she isn't studying). The words ती अभ्यास करत नाही tell what she does not do as a habit. To ask, add का: ती अभ्यास करत आहे का? (Is she studying?)

More spoken forms: खातेय, जातोय, वाचतेय.

Examples (5)

वाचतोय is the spoken form for a man.

आहेत goes with more than one doer.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a Hindi helping verb.

    तो खात रहा आहे.
    तो खात आहे.

रहा is Hindi. Marathi uses -त and आहे.

  • Leaving the singular आहे with a plural doer.

    मुले खेळत आहे.
    मुले खेळत आहेत.

मुले means more than one child, so the helper is आहेत.
