-त नाही

Not Doing Something

Level 1Sounds Like ta nāhī

In the negative the verb has no man or woman ending, so मी पीत नाही fits a man and a woman.

How It Works

PersonNegative
मीपीत नाही
तूपीत नाहीस
तो / तीपीत नाही
आम्ही / तुम्हीपीत नाही
ते (more than one)पीत नाहीत

The positive form shows a man or a woman (पितो, पिते). The negative does not, so you learn one form for both.

नाही comes after the verb and stays a separate word. Some stems lengthen their vowel before -त: पिणे gives पीत नाही. खाणे already has a long vowel: खात नाही.

The same pattern works with most verbs: मी जात नाही (I don't go), ती बोलत नाही (she doesn't speak). A time word makes it clear: आज आम्ही बाहेर जात नाही. The verb असणे has its own negative: मी घरी नसतो (I am usually not at home).

To ask a question, add का: तुम्ही कॉफी घेत नाही का? (Don't you have coffee?)

Examples (5)

  1. मी चहा पीत नाही.

    I don't drink tea.

The verb has no gender here, so a man or a woman can say this.

  2. तू रविवारी काम करत नाहीस.

    You don't work on Sundays.

    तू takes नाहीस.

  3. ती कॉफी पीत नाही.

    She doesn't drink coffee.

    ती takes नाही.

  4. आम्ही मासे खात नाही.

    We don't eat fish.

    आम्ही takes नाही.

  5. मुले दूध पीत नाहीत.

    The children don't drink milk.

More than one doer takes नाहीत.

Common Mistakes

  • Using नाहीस with ती.

    ती चहा पीत नाहीस.
    ती चहा पीत नाही.

    -स belongs only to तू. ती takes plain नाही.

  • Putting the -तो ending before नाही.

    मी चहा पितो नाही.
    मी चहा पीत नाही.

The -तो ending belongs to the positive form. Before नाही, use -त.
