नाही stays the same for most doers. तू takes नाहीस. तुम्ही, a respected person, and ते, त्या and ती meaning more than one take नाहीत.

How It Works

With an object, the verb matches the object: मी चहा केला नाही, मी भाजी केली नाही, मी जेवण केले नाही. A third-person doer takes -ने with an object: तिने पोळी केली नाही. With a -ला object the verb stays neuter: मी मुलाला पाहिले नाही.

The -स of तू moves to नाही: तू आलास becomes तू आला नाहीस.

नाही comes after the verb. To ask, add का: ती आली नाही का? (Didn't she come?)

A short answer repeats the verb: तू काल आलास का? नाही, मी आलो नाही. (A woman answers नाही, मी आले नाही.) Time words such as काल (yesterday) and आज (today) go in front of the verb.
