Saying Something Is Not

नाही also answers a question with no.

How It Works

To say something is not true, use नाही in the place of आहे. The word order stays the same, and the verb stays at the end.

आहोत and आहात both become नाही.

Use नाही also for there is not: घरात पाणी नाही means There is no water in the house.

For a respected person, use नाहीत: बाबा घरी नाहीत.

Do not add नाही to आहे. Replace आहे with नाही.

The word नाही is the same word that answers a question with no: तू घरी आहेस का? नाही.

Keep the place of नाही at the end: सई इथे नाही.

  1. मी डॉक्टर नाही.

    I am not a doctor.

    नाही replaces आहे.

  2. तू घरी नाहीस.

    You are not at home.

    नाहीस goes with तू.

  3. आम्ही आज घरी नाही.

    We are not at home today.

    आम्ही takes नाही, the same word as मी.

  4. मुले घरी नाहीत.

    The children are not at home.

    नाहीत goes with a plural doer.

  5. तुम्ही आज ऑफिसमध्ये नाही.

    You are not in the office today. This is said politely to one person.

    तुम्ही takes नाही, the same word as मी.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving off the -स ending after तू.

    तू घरी नाही.
    तू घरी नाहीस.

    तू takes नाहीस.

  • Putting नाही after आहे.

    मी घरी आहे नाही.
    मी घरी नाही.

    नाही replaces आहे.
