იმისთვის, რომ
In Order to
იმისთვის, რომ with the optative means in order to, and it puts the goal in the spotlight.
How It Works
იმისთვის (imistvis) is ის (that) in the genitive with -თვის (for), so it means for that. The რომ clause after it says what that is, with its verb in the optative.
| Reason: იმიტომ, რომ + ordinary verb | Goal: იმისთვის, რომ + optative |
|---|---|
| ქართულს ვსწავლობ, იმიტომ, რომ ქართველი მეგობრები მყავს. (because I have Georgian friends) | ქართულს ვსწავლობ იმისთვის, რომ საქართველოში ვიცხოვრო. (so that I can live in Georgia) |
The two look alike, so check the verb. A reason is a fact and uses an ordinary verb (მყავს). A goal has not happened yet and uses the optative (ვიცხოვრო).
იმისთვის can also stand right before the main verb, apart from რომ. This makes the goal the most important part of the sentence: იმისთვის ვაგროვებ ფულს, რომ ახალი მანქანა ვიყიდო (I'm saving money in order to buy a new car).
The clause alone can answer რისთვის?: — რისთვის გინდა ფული? — იმისთვის, რომ ბილეთი ვიყიდო.
