რომ + Optative
So That
Use რომ with the optative to say why someone does something: so that, in order to.
How It Works
To say why someone does something, Georgian adds a second clause that starts with რომ (rom). Its verb goes in the optative, the form you know from მინდა and უნდა.
| Main clause | Goal: რომ + optative |
|---|---|
| მოვედი, (I came) | რომ დაგეხმარო. (to help you) |
| ბაზარში წავედი, (I went to the market) | რომ ხილი ვიყიდო. (to buy fruit) |
| კარი გავაღე, (I opened the door) | რომ კატა შემოვიდეს. (so the cat could come in) |
The optative has its own person ending, so the goal can belong to someone else. In the first two rows, I am the one who helps and buys. In the last row, the cat comes in.
The main verb can be in any tense: მოვედი (I came), მოვდივარ (I'm coming) and მოვალ (I'll come) all work with რომ დაგეხმარო. The goal has not happened yet, and that is the optative's job.
The optative belongs to the past group, so the doer of a doing verb takes -მა and its object is nominative: ხმამაღლა ილაპარაკე, რომ ყველამ გაიგოს (speak loudly so everyone can hear).
