რათა

So That, In Writing

Level 5Sounds Like rata

რათა is a formal so that, followed by the optative: რათა ყველამ ისწავლოს (so that everyone can learn).

How It Works

რათა (rata) introduces a purpose: so that, in order to. It belongs to written and formal Georgian, such as articles and speeches.

  • ვმუშაობთ, რათა ყველამ ისწავლოს. (We work so that everyone can learn.)

The verb after რათა is in the optative, as after რომ when it means so that. The optative is a past-group form, so a doing verb's doer takes -მა: ყველამ ისწავლოს, მეტმა ადამიანმა ნახოს.

When რათა comes after the main part of the sentence, a comma goes before it.

In conversation, people use რომ: გთხოვთ, ნელა ილაპარაკოთ, რომ ყველამ გაიგოს. With რათა, the same sentence sounds like an announcement.

A purpose that belongs to a past sentence takes a different verb form after რათა, which comes at Level 6.
