Preposition + kiu
The Friend I Spoke with
Put the preposition before kiu: kun kiu, en kiu.
How It Works
| Example | Meaning |
|---|---|
| La amiko, kun kiu mi parolis, loĝas en Japanio. | The friend I spoke with lives in Japan. |
| La urbo, en kiu mi loĝas, estas malgranda. | The city I live in is small. |
| La libro, pri kiu ni parolis hieraŭ, estas nova. | The book we talked about yesterday is new. |
| Ĉio, pri kio ni parolis, estis vera. | Everything we talked about was true. |
English often puts the preposition at the end ("the friend I spoke with"). Esperanto puts it in front of kiu: kun kiu. The preposition cannot be left at the end of the clause.
The word kiu still agrees with its noun in number: la kolegoj, kun kiuj mi laboras. For a place, kie is a short alternative to en kiu: la urbo, kie mi loĝas.
Examples (5)
- La amiko, kun kiu mi parolis, loĝas en Japanio.
The friend I spoke with lives in Japan.
Kun stands in front of kiu.
- La urbo, en kiu mi loĝas, estas malgranda.
The city I live in is small.
En kiu shows the place; kiu has no -n.
- La libro, pri kiu ni parolis hieraŭ, estas nova.
The book we talked about yesterday is new.
Pri kiu names the topic.
- La kolegoj, kun kiuj mi laboras, venas el kvin landoj.

Kiuj is plural because kolegoj is plural.

Everything we talked about was true.
A preposition can also stand before kio.
Common Mistakes
Leaving the preposition at the end, as in English.
La amiko, kiu mi parolis kun, loĝas en Japanio.La amiko, kun kiu mi parolis, loĝas en Japanio. In Esperanto the preposition stands in front of kiu and does not come at the end.
Adding -n to kiu after a preposition.
La amiko, kun kiun mi parolis, loĝas en Japanio.La amiko, kun kiu mi parolis, loĝas en Japanio.Kun is followed by the plain form, so kiu has no -n here.
