kiu / tiu

Who, Which and That One

Level 2

Kiu asks about one person or thing in a group.

How It Works

WordMeaningExample
kiuwho, whichKiu estas ŝi?
kiunwho, which (object)Kiun libron vi legas?
kiujwho, which (several)Kiuj estas viaj amikoj?
tiuthat oneTiu estas mia amiko.
tiujthoseTiuj estas miaj amikoj.

Kiu and tiu pick out one person or thing from a group you know. With a noun they work like adjectives and copy its endings: kiun libron, tiuj libroj.

They can also stand alone, because the noun is understood from the situation. If nothing shows what is meant, they mean a person: Kiu venis? asks who came.

Kiu and tiu already point at something definite, so they take no la with them.

Examples (5)

  1. Kiu estas ŝi, Kofi?

    Who is she, Kofi?

Kiu asks who among the people you can see.

  2. Tiu estas mia amikino Ewa.

That one is my friend Ewa.

    Tiu points at one person.

  3. Kiun libron vi legas, Wei?

Which book are you reading, Wei?

Kiun matches libron, and both have -n.

  4. Tiuj estas miaj amikoj el Brazilo.

Those are my friends from Brazil.

Tiuj has -j for more than one.

  5. Mi ŝatas tiun hotelon.

    I like that hotel.

Tiun hotelon is the object, and both words end in -n.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving -n off the noun after kiun.

    Kiun libro vi legas?
    Kiun libron vi legas?

Kiu works like an adjective, so it copies the endings of its noun.

  • Putting la before tiu.

    Mi legas la tiun libron.
    Mi legas tiun libron.

Tiu already points at one book, so it cannot be used with la.
