kaj
And
Kaj joins things that do the same job in the sentence.
How It Works
The word kaj means and. It joins parts that play the same role.
| Joins | Example |
|---|---|
| two subjects | Ana kaj Kenji laboras. |
| two verbs | Ana manĝas kaj trinkas. |
| two objects | Mi havas katon kaj hundon. |
| two sentences | Mi legas kaj ŝi skribas. |
| a list | Mi havas katon, hundon kaj birdon. |
In a list of more than two things, you usually say kaj only before the last one. The earlier items are separated by commas. If both items need the object ending, both get it: katon kaj hundon.
The word kaj rhymes with the English word sky.
