Direction With -n
Moving into: Direction with -n
A place with -n shows where something goes.
How It Works
| Where it is | Where it goes |
|---|---|
| Mi estas en la ĉambro. | Mi iras en la ĉambron. |
| La libro estas sur la tablo. | Ewa metas la libron sur la tablon. |
| La kato dormas sub la lito. | La kato kuras sub la liton. |
The preposition stays the same, and the place noun adds -n. A describing word and the plural follow the usual pattern: sur la grandan tablon, en la ĉambrojn.
The -n shows that something moves to reach the place. La birdo flugas en la ĉambro means the bird is already inside and flies around. La birdo flugas en la ĉambron means that it flies in from outside.
The words al, el, de and ĝis already show direction, so they take no -n after them.
Examples (5)
- Mi estas en la ĉambro, sed Ana iras en la ĉambron.
I am in the room, but Ana is going into the room.
The first en shows a place, and the second shows movement into it.
- La kato saltas sur la tablon.
The cat jumps onto the table.
Sur la tablon shows where the cat lands.
- Ewa metas la libron sur la tablon.
Ewa puts the book onto the table.
The book is the object, and the table has -n for the direction.
- La birdo flugas en la ĉambron.
The bird flies into the room.
The -n shows that the bird comes in from outside.
- Ni veturas en la urbon.
We are driving into the city.
The -n shows that we go into the city, not that we drive around inside it.
Common Mistakes
Using -n for a place where you stay.
Mi estas en la ĉambron.Mi estas en la ĉambro.Estas does not move you anywhere, so the place takes no -n.
Leaving -n off when you move into a place.
Ŝi iras en la ĉambro.Ŝi iras en la ĉambron.Ŝi iras en la ĉambro says that she walks around inside the room. To go into it, add -n.
