tiu + Clause With kiu
Whoever, Wherever: Matching Pairs
The pair comes from the same table-word group, such as tiu with kiu and tie with kie.
How It Works
| Pair | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| tiu ... kiu | Mi helpos tiun, kiu havas demandon. | I will help the one who has a question. |
| tio ... kio | Mi ŝatas tion, kio estas simpla. | I like what is simple. |
| tie ... kie | Ni sidos tie, kie estas ombro. | We will sit where there is shade. |
| tiam ... kiam | Venu tiam, kiam vi povas. | Come when you can. |
| tia ... kia | Mi volas tian telefonon, kian havas Ana. | I want the kind of phone that Ana has. |
The two words match in kind, but each has the ending its own clause needs. In Mi helpos tiun, kiu havas demandon, tiun is the object of helpos, and kiu is the subject of havas.
The ti- word is often left out, especially in proverbs: Kiu dormas longe, vivas mallonge. A lone tiun or tiujn is not normally dropped, and neither is a ti- word that has a preposition before it: al tiu, al kiu.
Examples (5)
- Tiu, kiu venos unue, ricevos donacon.
Whoever comes first will get a gift.
Tiu points ahead to kiu, and both are subjects, so neither has -n.
- Ni iros tien, kie estas varme.
We will go where it is warm.
Tien has -n because it shows where we are going. Kie has no -n because the clause says where it is warm.
- Mi ŝatas tion, kio estas simpla.
I like what is simple.
Tio is paired with kio, the thing-word.
- Mi volas tian telefonon, kian havas Ana.
I want the kind of phone that Ana has.
Tian and kian both take -n, each as the object of its own verb.
- Kiu lernas Esperanton, trovas amikojn en multaj landoj.
Whoever learns Esperanto finds friends in many countries.
The ti- word is left out, as it often is in sayings.
Common Mistakes
Leaving out a lone tiu or tiuj.
Mi legis, kiujn vi rekomendis.Mi legis tiujn, kiujn vi rekomendis.A lone tiuj is not normally dropped. Without it, the sentence has no word that says what was read.
Pairing tio with kiu.
Mi komprenas tion, kiun vi diras.Mi komprenas tion, kion vi diras. The ti- word and the ki- word come from the same group: tio goes with kio, and kio takes -n because it is the object of diras.
