ĉu
Yes-or-No Questions
Put ĉu first. Nothing else in the sentence changes.
How It Works
The word ĉu turns a statement into a yes-or-no question. It stands first, and the word order does not change.
| Statement | Question |
|---|---|
| Vi parolas Esperanton. | Ĉu vi parolas Esperanton? |
| Ŝi estas hejme. | Ĉu ŝi estas hejme? |
| Kenji laboras. | Ĉu Kenji laboras? |
The answer is usually jes or ne. Later you will meet aŭ (or), which lets a ĉu question offer a choice. Questions that begin with a question word, such as who or where, use a different pattern, which a later entry shows.
Do not add a helping verb, and do not turn the verb and the subject around. The ĉ in ĉu sounds like ch in church.
Examples (4)
- Ĉu vi parolas Esperanton?
Do you speak Esperanto?
Ĉu comes first and the rest keeps its order.
- Ĉu Ewa estas hejme?
Is Ewa at home?
Ĉu is the only change from the statement Ewa estas hejme.
- Ĉu Amara kaj Pedro estas amikoj?
Are Amara and Pedro friends?
Ĉu starts the question; kaj joins the two names.
- Ĉu Kofi ne manĝas?
Is Kofi not eating?
Ne stays before the verb it denies, and ĉu still comes first.
