anstataŭ / antaŭ ol + Infinitive

Instead of and Before Doing

Level 4

The infinitive stands for a whole clause with the same subject.

How It Works

PatternExampleMeaning
anstataŭ + infinitiveAnstataŭ preni la buson, ni iris piede.Instead of taking the bus, we walked.
antaŭ ol + infinitiveAntaŭ ol eniri la ĉambron, Lucia frapis. Before entering the room, Lucia knocked.

The infinitive has no subject word of its own. Its doer is the subject of the main clause: Lucia enters, and Lucia knocks. If the doers differ, use a full clause: Mi lavas la manojn, antaŭ ol ni manĝas.

Besides anstataŭ and antaŭ ol, the prepositions por, krom and sen can stand before an infinitive. Other prepositions usually need a noun or a full clause.

The phrase can stand first or last in the sentence: Ni iris piede anstataŭ preni la buson.

Examples (5)

  1. Anstataŭ preni la buson, ni iris piede.

Instead of taking the bus, we walked.

The same people take and walk, so an infinitive follows anstataŭ.

  2. Antaŭ ol eniri la ĉambron, Lucia frapis.

Before entering the room, Lucia knocked.

    Lucia both enters and knocks.

  3. Anstataŭ ripozi hejme, Hiro helpis siajn amikojn.

Instead of resting at home, Hiro helped his friends.

The infinitive ripozi names what Hiro did not do.

  4. Antaŭ ol foriri, Kofi ŝlosis la pordon.

Before leaving, Kofi locked the door.

Antaŭ ol keeps ol in front of the infinitive.

  5. Mi lavas la manojn antaŭ ol manĝi.

I wash my hands before eating.

The phrase may stand at the end of the sentence.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving ol out of antaŭ ol before an infinitive.

Antaŭ eniri la ĉambron, Lucia frapis.
Antaŭ ol eniri la ĉambron, Lucia frapis.

Before a verb, antaŭ is followed by ol. Without ol, antaŭ needs a noun.

  • Giving the infinitive its own subject.

Mi lavas la manojn antaŭ ol ni manĝi.
Mi lavas la manojn antaŭ ol ni manĝas.

An infinitive has no subject of its own. When another subject appears, the verb needs a tense.
