How It Works

WordMeaningExample
kontraŭagainst, facingkontraŭ la vento
kromexcept, besidesĈiuj krom Ana venis.
malgraŭdespitemalgraŭ la pluvo
anstataŭinstead ofanstataŭ kafo

Krom has two jobs. In Ĉiuj krom Ana venis, Ana did not come. After a negative word the meaning turns around: in Neniu krom Ana venis, Ana did come. With ankaŭ in the sentence, krom adds a person: Krom Ana ankaŭ Ewa venis means that both came.

Kontraŭ can also mean facing: sidi kontraŭ la pordo is to sit facing the door.

Malgraŭ goes before a noun such as la pluvo. Before a whole clause, use kvankam (although) or malgraŭ tio, ke, which you will meet later.

Examples (5)

  1. La teamo de Kenji ludas kontraŭ la teamo de Ana.

Kenji's team plays against Ana's team.

Kontraŭ names the team on the other side.

  2. Ĉiuj amikoj krom Paulo venis al la kongreso.

All the friends except Paulo came to the congress.

    Paulo did not come.

  3. En la ĉambro estis neniu krom Ewa.

Nobody was in the room except Ewa.

After a negative word, krom names the one person who was there.

  4. Ni promenis malgraŭ la pluvo.

We went for a walk despite the rain.

The rain did not stop the walk.

  5. Anstataŭ kafo Lucia trinkas teon.

Instead of coffee, Lucia drinks tea.

Tea takes the place of coffee.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting a whole clause after malgraŭ.

    Ni promenis malgraŭ pluvis.
    Ni promenis malgraŭ la pluvo.

Malgraŭ is followed by a noun such as la pluvo, not by a verb with its own ending.
