por + Infinitive
In Order to
Por plus -i answers the question: what for?
How It Works
| Action | Aim with por |
|---|---|
| Mi lernas Esperanton | por paroli kun amikoj |
| Ŝi iras al la vendejo | por aĉeti panon |
| Ni ne havas tempon | por paroli |
The verb after por is always the infinitive, with -i. The infinitive can keep its own object, as in por aĉeti panon. Por also follows a noun and says what it is for: tempo por paroli (time to talk).
After iri and other verbs of movement, por can be left out when the infinitive follows right away: Ni iras manĝi means the same as Ni iras por manĝi. After povi, voli and devi, there is no por at all: Mi volas lerni.
