antaŭ ol / post kiam
Before and After
Antaŭ ol and post kiam are fixed pairs, and each starts a clause.
How It Works
| Words | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| antaŭ ol + clause | Antaŭ ol ni ekiris, Ana ŝlosis la pordon. | Before we set out, Ana locked the door. |
| antaŭ ol + infinitive | Antaŭ ol foriri, Lucia dankis siajn amikojn. | Before leaving, Lucia thanked her friends. |
| post kiam + clause | Post kiam ni manĝis, ni longe parolis. | After we ate, we talked for a long time. |
Antaŭ ol compares two times: the main clause happens first, and the antaŭ ol clause happens later. The tense is the tense each action would have on its own: Antaŭ ol vi alvenos, mi preparos la manĝon.
The word post alone cannot start a clause. It needs kiam: post kiam ni manĝis. Before a noun, use post alone: post la manĝo.
