Formal letters and emails use the same pattern: …ကြောင်း အကြောင်းကြားအပ်ပါသည် (we are writing to let you know that …).

How It Works

ကြောင်း means "that" in a written report. It closes the fact, and the verb of announcing or saying follows: ပွဲကို ရွှေ့ဆိုင်းကြောင်း ကြေညာသည်။ (It was announced that the event is postponed.)

The verb before ကြောင်း takes no ending. Write ရွှေ့ဆိုင်းကြောင်း, never ရွှေ့ဆိုင်းသည်ကြောင်း.

For a future fact, use မည်ဖြစ်ကြောင်း, as in the second row.

The verbs that follow it are verbs of reporting: ကြေညာ (announce), အသိပေး (inform), ပြောကြား (state), သိရ (learn). A formal letter closes with အကြောင်းကြားအပ်ပါသည် (we hereby inform you).

ကြောင်း and ဟု both report. ဟု keeps the speaker's own ending and fits quotes and thoughts. ကြောင်း drops the ending and fits announced facts, which is why notices and news use it so much.

Two words look close to it. ကြောင့်, with the dot ့, means "because", and အကြောင်း means "about". Check for the dot: ကြောင်း reports, and ကြောင့် gives a reason.

  1. ကျောင်းများ လာမည့်လတွင် ပြန်ဖွင့်မည်ဖြစ်ကြောင်း ပညာရေးဝန်ကြီးဌာနက ကြေညာသည်။

    The Ministry of Education announced that schools will reopen next month.

    The future fact ends in မည်ဖြစ်ကြောင်း before ကြေညာသည်.

  2. ရထားများ နာရီဝက်ခန့် နောက်ကျမည်ဖြစ်ကြောင်း ဘူတာက အသိပေးသည်။

    The station announced that trains would be about half an hour late.

    ကြောင်း closes the fact, and အသိပေးသည် reports it.

  3. ပွဲကို ရွှေ့ဆိုင်းလိုက်ကြောင်း စီစဉ်သူများက ကြေညာသည်။

    The organizers announced that the event has been postponed.

    The verb ရွှေ့ဆိုင်းလိုက် takes ကြောင်း with no ending.

  4. ဒေါ်ခင်ခင်က အကူအညီအတွက် ကျေးဇူးတင်ကြောင်း ပြောကြားသည်။

    Daw Khin Khin said she was grateful for the help.

    ကြောင်း reports her thanks as a stated fact.

  5. စာရင်းသွင်းခြင်း အောင်မြင်ပြီဖြစ်ကြောင်း အကြောင်းကြားအပ်ပါသည်။

    We are writing to let you know that your registration is complete.

    A formal email ends with the fact plus ကြောင်း and a fixed phrase.

Common Mistakes

  • Keeping the ending သည် before ကြောင်း.

    ပွဲကို ရွှေ့ဆိုင်းသည်ကြောင်း ကြေညာသည်။
    ပွဲကို ရွှေ့ဆိုင်းကြောင်း ကြေညာသည်။

    ကြောင်း follows the bare verb. The only ending is on the reporting verb.

  • Writing ကြောင့် (because) where ကြောင်း (that) is meant.

    ပွဲကို ရွှေ့ဆိုင်းကြောင့် ကြေညာသည်။
    ပွဲကို ရွှေ့ဆိုင်းကြောင်း ကြေညာသည်။

    With the dot, ကြောင့် gives a reason. A report of a fact needs ကြောင်း.
