It Is Reported That
It tells the reader the paper learned this from others and did not see it itself.
How It Works
ဟု သိရသည် means "it is learned that" or "it is reported that". It comes at the very end of a news sentence: နက်ဖြန်တွင် မိုးသည်းထန်စွာ ရွာသွန်းမည်ဟု သိရသည်။ (Heavy rain is expected tomorrow.)
It has two parts. ဟု closes the reported fact, and သိရသည် means "(we) come to know". Together they show where the news comes from: other people, officials or reports.

In English the same idea often needs a passive: "is reported to", "is expected to". Translate it in whichever way sounds natural.
A negative fact uses the short written negative, မ plus the bare verb: ထိခိုက်ဒဏ်ရာရသူ မရှိဟု သိရသည် (no one was reported injured).
Reports also write ကြောင်း သိရသည် with the same meaning: ကျဆင်းလာကြောင်း သိရသည် (prices are reported to be falling). With ကြောင်း, the verb before it has no ending.
Many news stories end every paragraph with ဟု သိရသည်, so learning to spot it helps you find where each report ends.

No one was reported injured in the fire.
The negative fact is မ plus the bare verb ရှိ.
- ရထားလမ်း ပြုပြင်ရေးလုပ်ငန်း အောက်တိုဘာလကုန်တွင် ပြီးစီးမည်ဟု သိရသည်။
Repair work on the railway is expected to finish at the end of October.
A future fact with မည် comes before ဟု သိရသည်.
- အဆိုပါ ဈေးကွက်ကို လာမည့်လတွင် ပြန်ဖွင့်မည်ဟု သိရသည်။
The market is reported to be reopening next month.
ဟု သိရသည် closes a report about a future plan.
Common Mistakes
Leaving out ဟု before သိရသည်.
မိုးရွာမည် သိရသည်။မိုးရွာမည်ဟု သိရသည်။ဟု closes the reported fact. Without it, the two verbs do not join.
