တာကို / မှာကို

An Event as an Object

Level 3

Many speakers leave out the ကို.

How It Works

Some verbs take a whole event as their object: you wait for something to happen, hear what someone said, or are afraid something will happen. Burmese turns the event into a noun first.

EndingWhenExample
တာကိုhappens or has happenedပြောတာကို ကြားတယ် (heard what was said)
မှာကိုhas not happened yetမိုးရွာမှာကို စိုးတယ် (afraid it will rain)

Verbs that often take these objects: စောင့် (wait), ကြား (hear), မြင် (see), သိ (know), ကြောက် (be afraid), နားထောင် (listen).

The မှာ here is the future form of တာ. It is a different word from the မှာ that means "at". The verb before တာ or မှာ drops its ending, and the subject of the event comes first: နီလာ လာမှာကို (Nila coming).

Fears and waiting usually take မှာ, because they are about something that has not happened yet.

Examples (5)

  1. ကျွန်မ ဖုန်းလာမှာကို စောင့်နေတယ်။

    I'm waiting for a call.

A woman is speaking; the call has not come yet, so မှာ fits.

  2. ဆရာ ပြောတာကို ကောင်းကောင်း နားထောင်ပါ။

Listen carefully to what the teacher says.

ပြောတာကို is the thing you listen to.

  3. ကျွန်တော် လေယာဉ်စီးရမှာကို ကြောက်တယ်။

I'm scared of having to fly.

A man is speaking; the flight is still to come, so မှာ fits.

  4. သူ ရန်ကုန်ကို ပြောင်းသွားတာကို မသိဘူး။

I didn't know he had moved to Yangon.

The move already happened, so တာ fits; သူ means "he" or "she".

  5. မိုးရွာမှာစိုးလို့ ထီးယူလာတယ်။

I brought an umbrella because I was afraid it would rain.

မိုးရွာမှာ is a future event, here without ကို.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting ကို straight after a verb.

    ဆရာ ပြောကို နားထောင်ပါ။
    ဆရာ ပြောတာကို နားထောင်ပါ။

A verb becomes a noun with တာ or မှာ before it can take ကို.

  • Keeping the ending တယ် before ကို.

    သူ ပြောင်းသွားတယ်ကို မသိဘူး။
    သူ ပြောင်းသွားတာကို မသိဘူး။

    Replace the ending with တာ.
