မှာပါ
Another Future Ending
This မှာ is spelled like မှာ "at", but at the end of a sentence it points to the future.
How It Works
Burmese has two common future endings. မယ် says what will happen. မှာ presents it as something planned or expected.
| Use | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Sure statement | လာမှာပါ။ | I'm sure she'll come. |
| Yes-or-no question | သွားမှာလား။ | Are you going to go? |
| Question word | ဘယ်တော့ ပြန်မှာလဲ။ | When are you going back? |
People use မှာပါ to reassure someone: မစိုးရိမ်ပါနဲ့၊ အဆင်ပြေမှာပါ။ (Don't worry. It'll be fine.)
In questions, မှာလား asks about a plan already made: မန္တလေးကို ရထားနဲ့ သွားမှာလား။ (Are you going to Mandalay by train?) မလား also makes offers, as in သွားမလား။ (Shall we go?)
မှာ is the whole ending. Do not add တယ် after it. Finish with ပါ, or with လား or လဲ in a question.
For the negative, use the plain negative: မလာဘူး။ (He's not coming.)
