လဲ
Question-Word Questions
For a future question, join မ and လဲ into မလဲ, as in ဘယ်အချိန် ရောက်မလဲ။ (What time will you arrive?)
How It Works
Burmese has two main question endings. Choose by looking for a question word. If the question has one, end with လဲ. If it has none, end with လား.
| Question word | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ဘာ (what) | ဘာလုပ်လဲ။ | What did you do? |
| ဘယ်သူ (who) | ဘယ်သူလဲ။ | Who is it? |
| ဘယ်မှာ (where) | ဘယ်မှာလဲ။ | Where is it? |
| ဘယ်လောက် (how much) | ဘယ်လောက်လဲ။ | How much is it? |
For plans, use မလဲ: ဘာစားမလဲ။ (What will you eat?). The answer keeps the same order and puts the new word where the question word was: မုန့်ဟင်းခါး စားမယ်။
In a question, the question word and လဲ always go together.
Examples (5)
- ဘယ်သူလဲ။
Who is it?
ဘယ်သူ is a question word, so the question ends with လဲ.
- ဘယ်အချိန် ရောက်မလဲ။
What time will you arrive?
မလဲ asks about a future event.
- ဘာသောက်မလဲ။
What will you drink?
ဘာ comes before the verb, and မလဲ ends the question.
- အိမ် ဘယ်မှာလဲ။
Where is your house?
လဲ follows ဘယ်မှာ directly.
- မနေ့က ဘာလုပ်လဲ။
What did you do yesterday?
လဲ covers the past too, with the time word မနေ့က.
Common Mistakes
Using လား after a question word.
အိမ်သာ ဘယ်မှာလား။အိမ်သာ ဘယ်မှာလဲ။ဘယ်မှာ is a question word, so the question ends with လဲ.
How It Connects
Learn This First
လဲ is the partner of လား, so yes-or-no questions come first.
