သော်လည်း
Although in Writing
Speech says ပေမယ့် in the same place.
How It Works
သော်လည်း means "although" or "but" in writing. It follows a bare verb, and the second clause says something you would not expect: ဤအခန်းသည် သေးသော်လည်း သန့်ရှင်းသည်။ (This room is small but clean.)
| Speech | Writing |
|---|---|
| ကြိုးစားပေမယ့် မအောင်ဘူး။ | ကြိုးစားသော်လည်း မအောင်ပါ။ |
| ဆရာဝန်ဖြစ်ပေမယ့် | ဆရာဝန်ဖြစ်သော်လည်း |
One linking word is enough. Some learners write သော်လည်း and then သို့သော်, the way they would say "although … but" in their own language. Keep only သော်လည်း. Save သို့သော် for the start of a new sentence.
When the first fact is a noun, add ဖြစ် (to be): မြန်မာလူမျိုး ဖြစ်သော်လည်း (although she is Burmese).
A negative second clause in writing ends in မ…ပါ or မ…ပေ: မအောင်မြင်ကြပါ (they did not succeed).
Formal prose and speeches also use စေကာမူ for "even though". It is heavier and less common than သော်လည်း, which you will meet in almost every newspaper.
When you read, the part after သော်လည်း is the point the writer wants you to notice. The part before it is the fact you would expect to change things.
