စေကာမူ

Even Though in Formal Prose

Level 6

After a noun, or a clause that ends in ပြီ, use ဖြစ်စေကာမူ: အသက် ၈၀ ကျော်ပြီဖြစ်စေကာမူ (although he is over 80).

How It Works

စေကာမူ joins two ideas that pull against each other: the first is true, and the second is true anyway. It means "even though" or "even if".

After a verb, add စေကာမူ straight on. After a noun, or a clause that ends in ပြီ, use ဖြစ်စေကာမူ: ဆရာဖြစ်စေကာမူ (though he is a teacher).

The word looks like the causative စေ (to make someone do something), but here စေ is part of one fixed word. Read စေကာမူ as a single unit meaning "even though".

You find it in editorials, speeches, school essays and novels, often in praise of someone: though the school is in the countryside, its standard is high; though he is over 80, he still writes every day. It sounds more weighty than သော်လည်း. Use it with other written forms, and end the sentence with သည်, မည် or ပါသည်.
