လို့

Because

Level 2

The reason ends in the bare verb. With တယ် before it, လို့ marks a quote: လာမယ်လို့ ပြောတယ်။ (He said he'd come.)

How It Works

Burmese gives the reason first. Put လို့ right after the reason, then say what happened.

Reason + လို့Result
မိုးရွာလို့မလာနိုင်ဘူး။ I can't come because it's raining.
ဗိုက်ဆာလို့ထမင်းစားမယ်။ I'm hungry, so I'll eat.
မအားလို့မသွားဘူး။ I'm busy, so I'm not going.

The reason ends in the verb itself, with no တယ် or မယ်. A reason in the past still has no ending: မနေ့က ဖျားလို့ ကျောင်းမသွားဘူး။ (I was sick yesterday, so I didn't go to school.)

A short answer to ဘာလို့ (why) is the reason plus လို့ပါ: အလုပ်များလို့ပါ။ (Because I've been busy with work.)

After a full sentence ending such as တယ် or မယ်, လို့ means "that" and quotes someone: သူ လာမယ်လို့ ပြောတယ်။ (He said he would come.) That use has its own entry.

For a reason that is a noun, use ကြောင့်: မိုးကြောင့် (because of the rain).

Examples (5)

  1. ဗိုက်ဆာလို့ ထမင်းစားမယ်။

I'm hungry, so I'm going to eat.

လို့ comes right after the reason ဗိုက်ဆာ.

  2. ကျွန်မ ခေါင်းကိုက်လို့ အိမ်မှာ နေမယ်။

I've got a headache, so I'll stay home.

The reason comes first, then the result.

  3. ကားကြပ်လို့ နောက်ကျသွားတယ်။

I was late because of the traffic.

The reason ကားကြပ် has no ending before လို့.

  4. အလုပ်များလို့ပါခင်ဗျာ။

Because I've been busy with work.

လို့ပါ gives a short, polite reason; ခင်ဗျာ shows a man is speaking.

  5. ဒီဆိုင် ဈေးချိုလို့ အမြဲလာတယ်။

This shop is cheap, so I always come here.

    ဈေးချိုလို့ means "because it's cheap".

Common Mistakes

  • Putting တယ် before လို့ for "because".

    မိုးရွာတယ်လို့ မလာဘူး။
    မိုးရွာလို့ မလာဘူး။

After တယ်, လို့ marks a quote. For a reason, put လို့ straight after the verb.
