Although and but
To start a new sentence with "but", use
How It Works
ပေမယ့် joins two facts that pull against each other. It sits at the end of the first clause.
| First fact + ပေမယ့် | Second fact |
|---|---|
English can say "although A, B" or "A, but B". Burmese has one shape for both: A-ပေမယ့် B.
The verb before ပေမယ့် loses တယ် or မယ်. Helpers such as နေ, ခဲ့ and the negative မ stay.
You will also see it spelled ပေမဲ့. Both are common, and they sound the same. When the two facts are separate sentences, start the second with ဒါပေမယ့်. Writing uses သော်လည်း.
The two clauses can have different subjects: (I called, but he didn't hear.) Put each subject at the start of its own clause.
